New Mexico State University: Stewart Street Tunnel Collapse
When New Mexico State University faced a collapsed utility tunnel on campus, they turned to us for a solution. Our team quickly assessed the situation and discovered that the roof structure had failed due to the deterioration of steel and concrete. This collapse occurred just one week before the start of the school year, affecting utilities like chilled water, which left many dorms without air conditioning. To address this urgent issue, we developed a plan that utilized temporary bracing to keep utility services operational during repairs. Additionally, we designed a strategy to rehabilitate an extra 150 feet of the tunnel that showed signs of deflection and deterioration. Understanding the critical need for utilities, our team acted swiftly, providing an immediate assessment just hours after the collapse. We implemented temporary bracing to restore normal utility service while permanent repairs were carried out.
